At Vivalyte, we love to shine a light on innovation, creativity, and human connections. That’s why we were thrilled to partner with young graduate product designers as they embarked on a journey to create an art installation for the Wonder Creative Festival in Kortrijk.
This festival represents more than just an event; it’s a celebration of the profound regional creative network that connects education institutions, industry experts, independent design studios, visionary entrepreneurs, and the broader creative community. By participating in the Wonder Creative Festival, we actively contribute to this vibrant tapestry of creativity and innovation, which aligns perfectly with our values of collaboration, empowerment, and supporting fresh ideas.
Meet Axelle Delboo (Howest IPO), June Reynaert (Howest IPO), Milena Pliashkevich (Howest IPO/Vivalyte), and Michiel Meersseman (Howest IPO / Vivalyte), the creative minds behind “The Encounter.” Their vision was to explore the concept of human connections, illustrating how we intersect and influence one another’s lives.
Have you ever pondered the origins of your personality? Have you considered the people who have influenced you and the values you’ve inherited from others? Are you curious about what helped shaping you into the person you are today? These are the questions that Axelle, June, and Milena contemplated as they delved into the essence of “nurture” versus “nature”.
Their light installation symbolizes the transformative power of personal encounters. It embodies the idea that, when we meet new people, our personalities can take on new qualities. The installation beautifully represents this transformation with lopped lines of light, symbolizing distinct personalities. As these forms intersect, colors merge, creating a vibrant representation of human connection and transformation.
Vivalyte played a crucial role in helping these talented students turn their artistic vision into a tangible reality. The collaborative process began with an ideation session, where the students envisioned their concept for “The Encounter”. This session marked the first step toward understanding how light could be harnessed to bring their idea to life.
Technical analysis followed, as Vivalyte provided invaluable expertise on the selection of lights, power sources, and other technical aspects needed to bring the installation to fruition. The students had a wealth of creative ideas, and we were there to help them navigate the intricacies of turning their concepts into a functioning work of art. Because at Vivalyte, we really like dynamic lighting that encourages interactivity.
The process of building the artwork was a labor of love and meticulous attention to detail. Here, Vivalyte’s Michiel Meersseman assumed a pivotal role. As a hands-on designer with a true passion for tinkering, he dedicated his skills to transforming this idea into a tangible work of art.
The shapes for the artwork were designed in 3D, cut to size with the CNC cutter, carefully assembled and attached, painted and fitted with the LED strips.
For this artwork, we used the Vivalyte Pixeline Flex. These flexible LED strips are ideal for illuminating irregular shapes and designs. The pre-cabled design with an external diffusive silicone casing guarantees an even distribution of light and an all-weather IP68 sealing. The latter is no luxury in the infamous Belgian autumn weather.
The result of this collaboration, called “The Encounter“ is now residing in the BK6 museum garden in Kortrijk.
Anyone can visit it as part of the Wonder creativity festival. As visitors engage with the artwork, they are invited to reflect on the intricacies of their own lives and how their encounters with others shape their unique personalities.
